Planeta extra virgin olive oil comes from two different olive groves, both belonging to the family. The first is the centuries-old grove named Ulmo, which surrounds the winery in Sambuca di Sicilia. The other is a younger grove called Capparrina and is situated on fertile land by the sea near Menfi, in the province of Agrigento.
Both groves grow three varieties of olive: Cerasuola, Biancolilla and Nocellara de Belice. The latter represents approximately 60% of total production and is typical of the area. It is recognised for its large-sized fruit and produces an oil with a very distinctive flavour. The other two varieties, Cerasuola and Biancolilla, have a much more delicate flavour.
The olives are handpicked when still green, usually 15 days before other estates in the area. This may seem a disadvantage for the yield, but the organoleptic characteristics of the oil benefit from the early harvest.
The olives are cold-pressed using modern equipment and a specialist in olive oil production in the Valle de Belice maintains the quality.
The oil has a wonderful green colour and a fresh bouquet of herbs, citrus fruit, artichokes and tomatoes. It has a delicate, full rather than spicy flavour. The characteristics displayed at the pressing stage are all kept throughout by careful attention to all stages of the production.
